About NBI

National Broadband Ireland (NBI) is designing, building and operating the new high-speed fibre broadband network for rural Ireland. NBI’s team brings together some of the most talented individuals in Ireland and across the world, with deep knowledge and experience in delivering projects to the scale of the NBP. This includes developing, building and operating networks and coordinating all the elements required to finance and deliver a project of the size and complexity of Ireland’s NBP.

We were established by Granahan McCourt, an international investor in technology, media and telecommunications. For over 30 years, Granahan McCourt has partnered with governments, corporations and communities to connect people through innovation in technologically underserved areas of the world.

Our partners include KN Group, Secto and Actavo. Nokia is providing all the active equipment for the project while Indigo is our network design partner. We are also working with infrastructure owners such as eir (pole and ducts network) and ESB. We will be responsible for the management of the new national broadband network for the next 25 years.

What We Believe

We believe that better broadband networks promote social progress, equality and sustainability. With equal access to local, national and global opportunity, every person, community and organisation in Ireland will be empowered to achieve more.

One of the biggest challenges facing rural Ireland is to bridge the digital divide with urban areas. To remedy this situation forever, we will deliver high-speed broadband to every household and business in the National Broadband Rollout area. No town, village or community will be left behind under the National Broadband Plan.

Together, we can build a limitless Ireland.

The National Broadband Plan

The National Broadband Plan (NBP) is the largest ever telecommunications project undertaken by the Irish State. It aims to radically transform the country’s broadband landscape through the delivery of quality, affordable high-speed broadband to all parts of Ireland where such services are not available commercially.

The NBP will ensure that all people and businesses have access to high-speed broadband, no matter where they live or work. Once completed, all parts of Ireland will have access to a modern and reliable broadband network, capable of supporting the communications, information, education and entertainment requirements of current and future generations.

The network will be designed, built and operated by National Broadband Ireland, using a combination of State subsidy and commercial investment . It will make its services available to all of the rollout area, which accounts for 23% of the population in about approximately 544,000 homes, farms, schools and businesses.
