10,800 homes, businesses and farms in Co Laois can avail of high-speed fibre broadband through National Broadband Plan

At the National Ploughing Championships in Ratheniska, Co Laois, National Broadband Ireland (NBI), the company rolling out the new high-speed fibre broadband network under the Government’s National Broadband Plan (NBP), has announced that over 4 in 5 (84%) Laois premises can now connect to the NBI™ network.

There are 10,840 homes, farms and businesses in Laois that are now ready to connect out of the total of 13,000 to be served by the NBP, which includes homes, farms, commercial businesses and schools. Of these, 3,746 premises have already connected to high-speed fibre broadband on the NBI™ network.

Under the National Broadband Plan, Laois will see an investment of €49M in the new high speed fibre network. This will enable e-learning, remote monitoring of livestock or equipment, e-health initiatives, better energy efficiency in the home, and facilitate remote working.

Peter Hendrick, Chief Executive Officer, National Broadband Ireland said: “I’m delighted to see the progress on the rollout here in Laois and the very strong take-up to date.

“NBI is thrilled to attend the Ploughing Championships and directly hear from people benefitting from high-speed fibre broadband in their locality. As the rollout progresses, we’re empowering more and more rural communities to avail of future-proofed fibre broadband. We’re advancing at pace, bringing fibre broadband to 10,000 new premises across the country every month.

“In Laois, over 10,800 premises can connect to the NBI™ network. This includes the rural surrounds of Portlaoise and Ballylinan. Most recently, NBI’s fibre broadband has been made available for over 2,500 premises Mountrath deployment area. This includes the rural areas and townlands surrounding Mountrath, Abbeyleix and Borris-in-Ossory.

“Already 3,700 Laois homes, farms and businesses have signed up with one of NBI’s retail partners and I’m encouraging Laois resident to visit nbi.ie where they can check their Eircode to see if they are ready to connect and sign up for updates.”

The NBI website is regularly updated to show estimated connection dates. Signing up to the NBI email notifications at /eoi/ is the easiest way to get the most up to date status of premises during the rollout and when premises will be ready for order.
