NBI address Galway County Council with overview of broadband rollout plan

NBI representatives travelled to Galway this week to present details of the National Broadband Plan (NBP) roll-out in the area, to a meeting of county councillors.

Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) Joe Lavin gave a high level overview of the NBP, and then focused on details of how the fibre to the home network would be rolled out in county Galway.

Galway is among the first counties where design and surveying works will begin in January 2020. There are 23 deployment areas in
Galway county, covering a total of 38,338 premises.

The first areas which will be surveyed include Clarinbridge, Claregalway, Furbo and Ballynahown. This will see detailed deigns covering 3,496 premises, and will be ready for connection by the end of 2020. Another two areas will be surveyed and designed in later 2020, and customers in these can connect in 2021.

NBI contractors will complete detailed surveys of all the
current infrastructure in place, including poles and underground ducts.
This will enable NBI to create detailed build designs for each deployment area.

Around 20 high speed internet access hubs – known as Broadband Connection Points (BCPs) will also be made available across the
county in 2020. These include community centres on a number of islands, and national schools which currently have poor broadband.
